Will work together on behalf of working and middle class families
PROVIDENCE, RI – Gina Raimondo, Democratic nominee for Governor, and Jorge Elorza, Democratic nominee for Mayor of Providence, today discussed their plans to address the burden that the car tax places on working families in Providence and across our state’s cities and towns.
“It is time for leaders to come together to find creative solutions to support working families," Raimondo said. “Placing a critical eye on ways to improve support to cities and towns and to reduce the burden of the car tax are two areas to examine. ”
Elorza said that if elected Mayor he will use technical assistance and any additional state resources made available if Raimondo is elected Governor to raise Providence’s car tax exemption up from $1,000.
He thanked Raimondo for identifying the State Vehicle Value Commission’s process for valuing cars as something that should be reexamined. Currently, vehicles are taxed based on their book value rather than their resale value.
“I certainly understand why so many Providence residents were surprised and upset when they started getting a car tax bill a few years ago,” Elorza said. “There’s so much good we can accomplish on behalf of working and middle class families when we work together at the state and local level.”
The event was held at Plainfield Auto, a used car dealership in Providence.
